XPRIZE 100 million $ for carbon offsets funded by Elon Musk
XPRIZE, the world leader in the design and launch of incentive contests to solve humanity’s great challenges, today announced the $ 100 million X-PRIZE carbon removal sponsored by Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation.
Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Telsa and SpaceX ; “We want to make a real difference. Carbon negativity, not neutrality. The ultimate goal is a scalable carbon emissions that is measured on the basis of the “cost per ton that takes everything into account” that includes the impact on the environment. This is not a theoretical competition, we want teams to build real systems that can bring about measurable change and grow to the level of gigatons. This will require what is required. Time matters, ”
Teams can submit natural, engineering and hybrid solutions. The judges of the competition will evaluate the teams according to four basic criteria:
- A working prototype of carbon removal that can be meticulously verified that it can eliminate at least one tonne a day.
- The team’s ability to prove to judges that its solution can be cost-effectively increased to a gigabyte level.
- The main metric in this competition is cost per ton that takes into account everything, including any necessary consideration of environmental benefit, persistence, and any value-added products.
- The last criterion is the length of time the carbon will be locked. A minimum target of 100 years is desirable.
XPRIZE, a non-profit organization under section 501 (c) (3), is the global leader in the design and implementation of innovative competition models to solve humanity’s greatest challenges. Active competitions include XPRIZE Carbon NRG COSIA of $ 20 million, X-PRIZE Rainforest of $ 10 million, XPRIZE Avatars ANA of $ 10 million, XPRIZE Speed Corona Testing of $ 6 million, IBM Watson Artificial Intelligence of $ 5 million, X-PRIZE Training The rapid re-launch of $ 5 million and the epidemic response challenge of $ 500,000.
